Divorce, job transfer, death, health, new spouse, new child, graduation, moving, apartment living, parrot turned mean, parrot plucks, buyers remorse, retirement, not enough time, not enough money... Just a few of the many reasons that parrots sometimes need to find a new family.

The term “Forever Home” has been coined by the industry and is a commendable thought, but the facts-of-life stated above describe the reality of our world, and “forever just ain’t what it used to be.” Life’s changing circumstances can affect even the most determined person’s ability to keep a beloved companion animal, but life sometimes just gets in the way. A trip through any humane shelter will reveal that many animals are there because of these, and a multitude of other reasons. Likewise, many parrots are given up because of misunderstood or poorly accommodated natural behaviors.

Previously owned parrots can and do make wonderful companions and pets, but sometimes require humane behavior correction for them, and/or parrot management training for you. Thousands of parrots are resold for a fraction of their “baby” value and adjust superbly in second homes.

Many sellers get discouraged and end up giving the bird away, donating the bird to a bird adoption/rescue/sanctuary type organization, or worse...just neglect and ignore the bird. Many of these organizations, although noble in cause, are often terribly underfunded, because there is NO profit motive, only a reliance on the good nature of donors, which tend to decrease during economic downturns like the one we face now. If you ever want to adopt a bird from a non-profit, don't be surprised to fill out mounds of applications, perform community service, have your home "inspected" and have a million restrictions forever concerning the bird, while still having to pay a pretty high adoption FEE!
